10. Ise Grand Shrine – Japan
This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu-ōmikami and is one of the most important in the entire country.Consisting of two main shrines and about 125 additional shrines, access to the entire site is strictly limited.To enter, you must be a priest or priestess, who also must be a member of the Japanese imperial family. Normal citizens will have to be content with simply glimpsing at the thatched roofs of the buildings, which are hidden behind wooden fences.Every 20 years, the two main buildings inside the shrine are rebuilt in adherence to the original design blueprints from over 1,000 years ago. It’s a tradition that stems back to the Shinto belief in renewal.
