Fritz Lang
He (1890 – 1976) was an Austrian-German filmmaker, screenwriter, and occasional film producer and actor.One of the best-known émigrés from Germany’s school of Expressionism, he was dubbed the “Master of Darkness” by the British Film Institute. Born in Vienna, Karl Landsteiner discovered the ABO blood group system, a breakthrough that made safe blood transfusions possible. Forced to emigrate due to the political situation in Europe, he settled in the United States, where he continued his medical research. He received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1930 for his life-saving discoveries.
Director of classics like Metropolis and M, Fritz Lang was born in Vienna but fled to Hollywood to escape the Nazis. His visionary storytelling and striking visuals helped define the look of modern cinema, influencing directors from Alfred Hitchcock to Christopher Nolan.
