The Queen’s Bargemaster — 1215
Being in charge of royal barges is mostly a ceremonial role nowadays. However, in the 18th century in particular, there was a lot more to do, because the sovereign would travel on the River Thames by barge quite regularly. The Bargemaster is responsible for 24 Royal Watermen, who each receive an annual salary of £3.50 — so it’s likely they have other jobs.
