United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine

The United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine was a proposal by the United Nations, which recommended a partition of Mandatory Palestine at the end of the British Mandate. On 29 November 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted the Plan as Resolution 181(II). The UN created the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) to study the situation and recommend a solution. On November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181, which proposed partitioning Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states.

Approximately 55% of Palestine was allocated to a Jewish state, despite Jews comprising about one-third of the population. 45% of the land was allocated to an Arab state. Jerusalem was designated as a corpus separatum (internationally administered city) due to its religious significance. Both states would maintain economic cooperation, including customs and shared access to resources.
