The recent unrest in homeland harkens back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Beginning in 1978, large-scale anti-government demonstrations challenged homeland’s ruling monarchy under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, resulting in the removal of the shah and the creation of an Islamic state headed by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
