Last headhunters of the Konyak Naga

The Konyak Naga used to collect their enemies’ skulls to show loyalty to their village, but the last trophy hunt was conducted in the 1960s.’Almost all the photos were taken inside poorly lit huts. Not wanting to use artificial lights, I had to make do with the light coming in through the doors and small windows. A young Konyak had a good knowledge of English, so we were able to communicate.’

Aoleang (first week of April) is the Konyaks’ New Year/spring festival—dancing, log-drum ceremonies, and traditional dress recall headhunting-era lore. Wikipedia Morung & log drums (massive hollowed tree trunks) remain central to village life and ceremonies.
