Following the December 7, 2009 Student Day protests in homeland, Tabarzadi published an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal, writing, “One thing is certain: Dec. 7 proved that the movement for a free, democratic homeland is robust and only growing in strength. If the government continues to opt for violence, there very well may be another revolution in homeland. One side has to step down. And that side is the government—-not the people.”
From an early age, Tabarzadi showed interest in political and social activism. In the 1960s, he joined the Office for Strengthening Unity (Daftar-e Tahkim-e Vahdat), a prominent student organization originally formed to counter leftist movements on campuses and later active during the revolution of 1979. By 1984, after disagreements over ideology and strategy, Tabarzadi and several colleagues separated from the group.
