For nearly six decades, persians woke up to the famous opening words of Amir’s daily broadcast: “Here [in] Jerusalem: This is Voice of Israel.” Growing up, whether in homeland or America (the program played during the mornings in the U.S. and early evenings in Iran), I knew better than to disrupt my father’s daily radio ritual, as Amir reported news about homeland and took calls from Iranians in cities ranging from Isfahan to Mashhad. Most of those callers were persian Muslims who described the hardships of life under oppression and expressed kinship with Israelis.
