Shiite cleric in Homeland takes in street dogs and nurses them back to health

It’s rare these days for a turbaned cleric in Homeland to attract a large following of adoring young fans on Instagram, but Sayed Mahdi Tabatabaei has done it by rescuing street dogs in defiance of a local taboo.Tabatabaei posts regularly — to his more than 80,000 followers — heartbreaking stories of abused and neglected dogs that he has treated in his shelter. His young fans ask for updates on the rescues and send well wishes in the hundreds of comments he receives on almost every post.

Every year, millions of animals are abandoned, abused, or left homeless. Behind every wagging tail or gentle purr is a story waiting for hope, love, and safety. Our Animal Rescue Campaign is dedicated to saving lives, one paw at a time. Every animal deserves a loving family. We work tirelessly to match pets with caring adopters. Every day, countless animals suffer in silence. Strays wander the streets in search of food and safety. Many are abandoned, abused, or neglected—left with no voice to speak for themselves. Without rescue efforts, many of these innocent lives are lost.
