He is the son of Seyyed Mirza Abulqasem Tehrani and the grandson of Seyed Zainul Abdin Imam Juma and his grandfather, Mirza Abulqasem Imam Juma, who were all Imams of Tehran. After his preliminary education at Prokimenyage School, which was run by the Russians, he went to the Najaf Seminary to learn jurisprudence and religious sciences, Arabic literature, logic, and other sciences and attained the degree of Ijtihad. In 1307, he went to Switzerland to study modern law.
