Instead of being reprimanded by the Shah due to these remarks, he was named commander of the ground forces on January 10, , succeeding Gholam Ali Oveissi, who had resigned from office and left Homeland.  Badrei formed a group to carry out a military coup on February 10, just before the Iranian revolution.  He served in the post of Imperial Ground Forces commander until his death on February 11 February.
