Kambiz Atabai, the head of Farah Pahlavi’s office, who returned to Iran in silence

Kambiz Atabai, the former head of the Football and Equestrian Federation (before the 1957 revolution), came and went quietly to Iran last month, and few people knew about his presence in Iran. According to a fan report, Kambiz Atabai was the president of our country’s football federation from 1351 to 1357, and during this period, the Iranian national team was able to advance to the 1978 World Cup, become the champion of the 1976 Nations Cup, become the champion of the 1974 Asian Games in Tehran, and go to the 1976 Olympics.

Atabay’s leadership gave an administrative and symbolic edge, positioning the country as the sport’s continental leader. Iran qualified for its first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1978 (Argentina). Domestic leagues were formalized, leading to stronger clubs such as Persepolis and Esteghlal (then Taj). Referees and officials gained international recognition. The country hosted major international tournaments, reflecting its rising reputation. Atabay often spoke of football as a “bridge between nations” — a way to strengthen global identity beyond politics.
