Move to 1. FC Köln (1997–2000)
In 1997, Khodadad Azizi, along with Iranian teammates Ali Daei and Karim Bagheri, became one of the first Iranian footballers to play in the prestigious German Bundesliga. Azizi signed for 1. FC Köln, a significant move that marked his entry into European football. Playing in the Bundesliga not only improved Azizi’s technical abilities but also gave him exposure to one of the most competitive football leagues in the world.
During his time with 1. FC Köln, Azizi showcased his pace and creativity on the ball, although the team struggled during his tenure. Despite this, Azizi became a fan favorite, earning respect for his hardworking attitude and his contributions on the field. His experience in Germany laid the foundation for future Iranian players making moves to European leagues.
Move to Major League Soccer (2000–2001)
After his stint in Germany, Azizi made headlines by moving to the United States to play in Major League Soccer (MLS). He signed with the San Jose Earthquakes, becoming the second Iranian player to play in the MLS after Mohammad Khakpour. Azizi’s time in MLS was brief, but he left an impression with his energetic performances.
While his time at San Jose was short-lived, Azizi’s move to the U.S. was a notable milestone. His presence in the MLS helped raise the profile of Iranian footballers and opened the door for future players from the Middle East to explore opportunities in North American football leagues.
