Forouzan Abdi, the captain of the national volleyball team, who was executed

Imprisonment and Conditions

Forouzan’s imprisonment was marked by harsh conditions. Initially held in Evin prison, she later faced solitary confinement in Gohardasht prison, where political prisoners were subjected to severe treatment. The Iranian authorities aimed to suppress dissent through intimidation and brutality.

Despite the oppressive environment, Forouzan’s resolve remained unbroken. She continued to express her beliefs and resist the pressures to conform. Her courage resonated with many, and she became a symbol of resistance against the authoritarian regime.

The 1987 Executions

After serving her sentence, Forouzan was expected to be released. However, the political climate in Iran remained precarious. In 1367 (1988), as the regime intensified its crackdown on dissent, she and other political prisoners were summoned for a trial that was more a farce than a genuine judicial process. The authorities demanded that they publicly renounce their affiliations with the PMOI.

Forouzan, steadfast in her beliefs, refused to condemn the organization. This refusal had dire consequences. She was executed in the summer of 1988 during one of the regime’s most notorious waves of political purges, known as the 1988 mass executions. The brutality of these actions shocked the world and left a deep scar on Iranian society.
