Behind the scenes of the film Khak by Masoud Kimiaie

The Cinematic Experience

Despite the controversy, Khak remains a masterpiece of Iranian cinema, praised for its powerful performances, dramatic storytelling, and striking visuals. Behrouz Vosoughi’s portrayal of Saleh and Faramarz Qaribian’s depiction of Musayyib brought depth and intensity to the characters, capturing the emotional turmoil of their struggle.

The film’s cinematography, set against the backdrop of Dezful County, further enhanced its visual appeal. Key scenes were filmed in several villages, including Choghasabz, Shamsabad, and Shalgahi. The old Choghasabz castle, with its unique architecture, served as a primary location, providing a compelling setting for the story’s climactic moments. Tragically, this historic site no longer exists, but its role in Khak preserves its memory in Iranian cinematic history.

The Amir Bahman Khan Mansion, used as the residence of the foreign wife, added an air of grandeur and colonial symbolism to the film. The cemetery scenes, filmed at the tomb of Mohammad bin Jafar, imbued the narrative with a sense of spiritual and emotional gravity.
