Diplomatic Maneuvering: Trump, Macron, and Zelenskyy
The highlight of the day wasn’t just the ceremony but also a hastily arranged meeting involving Trump, Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Originally, Macron had planned a separate meeting with Zelenskyy. However, the French president seized the opportunity to organize a three-way discussion, emphasizing the need for alignment on Ukraine’s defense against Russia.
The meeting lasted approximately 90 minutes, with Trump first conferring privately with Macron before being joined by Zelenskyy. Conducted in English with the aid of a translator, the discussions were emblematic of the complex dynamics at play. Trump has previously pledged to resolve the Ukraine-Russia conflict swiftly but remains vague about his approach, sparking concerns in Kyiv about potential concessions to Moscow.
Macron appeared keen to emphasize unity, stating on social media, “United States, Ukraine, and France. Together on this historic day. United for Notre-Dame. Let’s continue to work together for peace and security.”
Trump’s Transition Team and Global Stakes
Trump’s delegation to Paris included key advisors, such as his incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles, Middle East special envoy Steve Witkoff, and senior adviser Massad Boulos. However, the group notably lacked specialists on Ukraine, raising questions about the depth of Trump’s preparedness for engaging with such a critical issue.
Zelenskyy, for his part, has taken proactive steps to build bridges with Trump’s team. Earlier in the week, his top aide Andriy Yermak held meetings with key members of Trump’s transition team in the United States. This reflects Ukraine’s understanding of the stakes involved as the incoming administration’s stance could profoundly impact Kyiv’s ability to resist Russian aggression.
Macron, too, has stressed the importance of continued support for Ukraine, warning that any unfavorable resolution to the conflict would weaken the West’s credibility and, by extension, Trump’s own political leverage.
