Fifty-six years ago on this day, heavy rain and flooding flooded some streets in Capital

Areas Affected by the Flood

On January 10, 1968, several key areas in central Tehran were hit hardest by the floodwaters. Among the areas most affected were those in proximity to important institutions such as the Finance Palace, the National Bank, and the Darupakhsh Pharmaceutical Company. These neighborhoods, which were home to both businesses and residential properties, experienced severe disruptions as the water inundated the streets and properties.

  1. The Finance Palace Area: The Finance Palace, a significant administrative building in Tehran, was located in an area prone to flooding, given its proximity to the river and surrounding low-lying streets. As the heavy rains poured down, the streets near the palace quickly turned into rushing rivers, making it difficult for people to commute or even walk. Water levels reached dangerous heights, flooding the surrounding buildings and damaging crucial infrastructure. It was a vivid example of how Tehran’s urban landscape, despite being home to key governmental institutions, lacked the adequate resilience to cope with such natural disasters.
