Ansari’s work was not without controversy. In 2022, she and other council members faced criticism for using a city-owned suite at the Footprint Center to attend sports events and concerts. In response, the council initiated a review of its economic development strategies and considered leasing out the suite to avoid further scrutiny.

Ansari resigned from her City Council position on March 28, 2024, to focus on her campaign for Arizona’s 3rd congressional district. Her candidacy had been widely anticipated, and she quickly gained momentum, leading early fundraising efforts and securing key endorsements. In the Democratic primary, Ansari narrowly defeated her closest rival, Raquel TerĂ¡n, by just 39 votes. Her victory in the general election was decisive, reflecting the district’s strong Democratic leanings.
In November 2024, Ansari was elected the Democratic freshman class president, further solidifying her influence within the party. Her legislative priorities have included climate action, affordable housing, and support for unions and LGBTQ+ rights. Ansari’s advocacy extends to addressing homelessness, where she has pushed for expanded temporary and affordable housing options.
