Ahmad Khomeini in the picture frame

When the Central SAVAK was informed of Ahmad’s trip, an urgent telegram was received from the Hamedan SAVAK as follows: “Yesterday, Seyyed Ahmad Khomeini, the son of Ruhollah Khomeini, arrived from Iraq and… took up residence in the house of Shahab al-Din Ishraqi.”

Below this telegram, the Central SAVAK Chief wrote: “Mr. Saberi, write to the Qom SAVAK. This person returned to Qom from Iraq last week and after arriving in Qom went to Hamedan to meet Ishraqi. While the Qom SAVAK did not inform about this, give orders to monitor these activities. His actions should be closely monitored so that the purpose of his visit would be clear.”

Following this report and subsequent instructions, SAVAK in Qom increased its surveillance of Khomeini’s home and Ahmad’s behavior. However, a few months later, Ahmad secretly crossed the border again. This time, SAVAK learned of his trip when he returned at the border.

In his first stay in Najaf in 1944 and 1945, Ahmad continued his religious education with his father and brother, and about five months later, he secretly returned to Iran. On his way back, he was arrested at the Khosravi border crossing and transferred to the security organization there. Documents and files of SAVAK show that he deceived the agents during his interrogations and that his identity was not recognized by SAVAK at the border. After his release, he traveled to Qom via Kermanshah and Hamedan.
