In the years following the 1979 revolution, the brick walls surrounding the former U.S. embassy have been noted for their anti-American murals. The designs of these murals have changed at different times, reflecting ongoing conflicts between the Iranian and American governments.
In 2013, during the nuclear negotiations between Iran and the P5+1, a design called “American Honesty” was painted on the wall of the US embassy. The design, originally designed by the Oj Institute affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, conveyed the message that negotiations with the US were useless because they were not honest.
In 2019, a few days before the anniversary of the embassy occupation, new murals were unveiled on the walls in the presence of IRGC Commander-in-Chief Hossein Salami. The new murals include images of a collapsed Statue of Liberty, an American drone sinking in a sea of blood, Hamid Steele’s goal against the US soccer team in which the soccer ball is transformed into a clenched fist, and designs with the logos of famous American companies such as McDonald’s, Walt Disney, and Lockheed Martin.
