Synodality and Ecclesial Renewal

One of the hallmarks of Francis’s papacy was his push for synodality—the idea of a listening, participatory Church. He convened several synods, most notably the Synod on Synodality (2021–2024), which emphasized dialogue, discernment, and the inclusion of lay voices in Church decision-making. It was seen as the culmination of his ecclesial vision and the most significant Church event since the Second Vatican Council.

Under his leadership, the Church became more visibly global, less Eurocentric, and more responsive to the realities of diverse Catholic communities, from the Amazon to Asia.

Death and Legacy

Pope Francis died at 88 on April 21, 2025, Easter Monday, after suffering a stroke and subsequent cardiocirculatory collapse. The day before, he had appeared at the Easter Sunday Mass, offering a final blessing to the world. His funeral drew millions to Rome, including world leaders, religious figures, and faithful from every corner of the globe.

His death marked the end of a historic and consequential papacy. Francis redefined what it meant to be pope—not as a monarch but as a shepherd. He emphasized mercy over judgment, dialogue over dogma, and action over ideology. In doing so, he helped bridge the gap between tradition and the modern world.
