Focus on Intergovernmental Cooperation
A major topic of discussion was the activities of the Azerbaijan-Iran intergovernmental commission. Both sides lauded the efforts of the commission, which has played a pivotal role in identifying areas of mutual interest and orchestrating coordinated efforts in trade, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange.
President Aliyev emphasized that through the work of the intergovernmental commission, Azerbaijan and Iran have successfully implemented several major projects, with more initiatives in the pipeline. In his remarks, he praised the resilience and adaptability of the commission in navigating various challenges, noting that it had matured into a highly efficient mechanism for bilateral dialogue.
President Pezeshkian, in turn, reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to enhancing the scope and efficacy of the commission’s activities. He proposed the establishment of more sector-specific subcommittees that would focus on priority areas such as energy, transport, agriculture, and cultural exchange, thereby broadening the scope of cooperation even further.
Energy Cooperation: A Pillar of Strategic Ties
One of the most critical areas of dialogue was energy cooperation, particularly in the field of electric power. Both Azerbaijan and Iran possess significant energy resources, and there exists considerable potential for synergy between their energy sectors.
The two leaders discussed the prospects of synchronized electricity networks, the potential for joint investments in energy infrastructure, and mutual assistance during periods of peak demand. President Aliyev highlighted that energy cooperation not only serves economic interests but also cements political ties by creating a dense web of interdependence.
