Bahman Salehnia (March 19, 1938 – May 10, 1404) stands as one of the most revered figures in the history of Iranian football. Known widely as the “Father of Sailors,” he played a transformative role in the rise of Malavan Bandar Anzali Football Club and the broader football culture of northern Iran. From grassroots youth training to national-level coaching, his life’s work was dedicated to nurturing talent, promoting discipline, and embedding football into the cultural identity of Bandar Anzali.


Early Life and Passion for Football

Born in the Samansar neighborhood of Bandar Anzali on March 19, 1938, Bahman Salehnia’s passion for football was evident from a young age. His earliest experiences with the sport began during his school years when he played for the Bandar Anzali school team. Under the mentorship of Jabbar Samadi, he quickly distinguished himself through discipline and skill, which led his team to a provincial championship. His team went on to represent Gilan Province in a national tournament in Tabriz.
