The secrets that Michael Jackson took to her grave

Joe Jackson recognized the musical potential of his children early and began drilling them in rehearsals that were both rigorous and, as Michael later revealed, often abusive. Michael recalled his father sitting with a belt in his hand, ready to punish any mistakes. While the discipline was harsh, it cultivated a remarkable precision and professionalism in the Jackson children that would serve them throughout their careers.

The Jackson 5: A Star Is Born

In 1964, Michael and his brother Marlon joined their older brothers Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine in a group initially called the Jackson Brothers. By 1966, they became the Jackson 5, with Michael, barely eight years old, emerging as the lead vocalist thanks to his extraordinary voice and natural charisma.

The group began performing in local talent shows and clubs across the Midwest, quickly gaining a reputation for their polished harmonies and energetic stage presence. They won the Amateur Night competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem in 1967, a milestone that propelled them to national attention.

In 1968, the Jackson 5 signed with Motown Records, where they were groomed by Berry Gordy into polished entertainers. Their first single, “I Want You Back”, topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1969, followed by “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There.” Michael’s voice, full of soul and emotional depth far beyond his years, captivated audiences worldwide.

The Jackson 5 became one of Motown’s biggest acts, and Michael emerged as the standout member. Even as a child, his dancing, charisma, and natural showmanship made him a star.
