Mitra Hajjar: From winning the Crystal Simorgh at the Fajr Festival to arrest

Mitra Hajjar was born on February 4, 1976, in Mashhad, one of Iran’s largest and most culturally rich cities. As the first child of Mohammad Hassan Hajjar and Mehri Jahed, she grew up in a family that valued education, culture, and art. Her family’s intellectual environment shaped her sensitivity to literature and the arts from a young age. Mitra has a sister named Maryam and a brother named Mojtaba, both of whom have pursued professional lives away from the public eye but remain part of her close support circle.

Mashhad, being both a spiritual and intellectual center, had a significant influence on her early years. The city’s blend of traditional Iranian culture and modern influences exposed Hajjar to a wide range of artistic stimuli—from classical Persian poetry to theater and cinema. Her parents encouraged reading and artistic exploration, and by adolescence, she was already drawn to the expressive potential of film.
