The hidden danger of weight loss diets

Bones are dynamic structures that constantly regenerate and rely on essential nutrients—especially calcium and vitamin D—to remain dense and strong. When a person follows a restrictive or unbalanced diet that limits these nutrients, the body must compensate to maintain calcium levels in the blood. It does this by withdrawing calcium from the bones, gradually weakening their structure. Over time, this process leads to decreased bone density and a greater susceptibility to osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become brittle and prone to fractures even from minor falls or injuries.

Rapid weight loss can make this problem worse. During extreme dieting, the body’s hormone levels, particularly estrogen in women, tend to drop. Since estrogen plays a vital role in protecting bone mass, a reduction in this hormone accelerates bone loss. Women approaching or going through menopause are especially at risk, as their natural estrogen levels are already declining. The combined effect of nutrient deficiency and hormonal changes significantly increases the likelihood of bone fractures and long-term skeletal weakness.

To prevent such damage, it is essential to follow a balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein, and to engage in regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises.
