Hadi Marzban’s funeral

Marzban’s professional theater career officially began in 1979, the same year Iran underwent a historic revolution that redefined its cultural identity. The new social and political environment imposed new constraints and opportunities on all artists, particularly those involved in theater, which was expected to function as both an educational tool and an expression of collective values.

Entering the field at this moment required adaptability and an ability to interpret texts in ways that resonated with the changing society. Marzban proved himself capable of doing precisely that. His earliest works displayed an emphasis on emotional realism, careful blocking, disciplined mise-en-scène, and attention to psychological subtleties. These elements quickly set him apart from contemporaries whose work remained either overly traditional or excessively experimental.

By the early 1980s, he had become a recognizable figure in Tehran’s evolving theater community. His productions, though not yet the monumental interpretations of Akbar Radi’s plays for which he later became famous, indicated the arrival of a director who valued dramatic depth over spectacle. He was quickly recognized for his sensitivity to actors and his ability to guide them toward emotionally honest performances.
