A Controversial Appointment Amid Political Tensions
In Aban 1404, under the new administration of President Masoud Pezhakian, Esfahani was appointed as the Head of the Energy Optimization and Strategic Management Organization—a newly formed body intended to unify energy management structures, including the Fuel Consumption Optimization Company and the Transportation and Fuel Management Headquarters.
This appointment triggered intense reactions within reformist circles. Many reformists criticized Pezhakian, himself historically aligned with reformist politics, for giving a high-ranking position to someone they viewed as ideologically conservative and closely tied to the previous administration.
The controversy escalated when Fayyaz Zahed, a member of the Government Information Council, resigned in protest. Reformist media outlets, particularly those known for ideological scrutiny of government appointments, published editorials and opinion pieces questioning the wisdom of Esfahani’s placement and its implications for administrative coherence.
Conversely, conservative commentators defended the appointment, emphasizing merit over factional loyalty. Javan newspaper, in particular, denounced the reformist backlash as a “fascist” approach prioritizing partisan gain over national interest. The paper praised Pezhakian’s willingness to work with capable figures regardless of political background.
