
As a faculty member at the University of Tehran, Ghalibaf has held the position of associate professor in the Department of Political Geography, where he has published several books and articles. Among his published works are Local Government or the Strategy of Spatial Distribution of Political Power in Iran, Iran and the Developmental State, and The Contemporary Middle East: Political History after World War I. These works highlight his deep engagement with both Iranian and regional political history, making him a significant academic figure in the fields of political geography and Middle Eastern studies.
Military Career and Role in the Iran-Iraq War
Ghalibaf’s military career is a key aspect of his life story and public image. His entry into the IRGC during the early years of the Islamic Republic of Iran allowed him to play an active role in the country’s defense during the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988). During the war, he served in various positions of increasing responsibility. Ghalibaf’s leadership abilities were demonstrated as he rose through the ranks, ultimately commanding the 21st Imam Reza Brigade. He later became the commander of the 5th Nasr Khorasan Division.
His time as a commander in the war solidified his reputation as a dedicated and capable military leader. The experiences of the war shaped Ghalibaf’s outlook on Iran’s national security and defense policies, which later influenced his approach to governance and political leadership. After the war, Ghalibaf continued his military career in various roles, including a position as the head of the IRGC’s Air Force, where he was tasked with overseeing the country’s air defense capabilities.
