Teaching women how to ride motorcycles

The Government’s Resolution: Key Features

The Cabinet’s resolution, passed in February of this year, specifically outlines the procedures that must be followed in order for women to receive motorcycle training and licenses. According to Tafreshi, the first step in this process is the provision of practical motorcycle riding training for female applicants. This is to be overseen by the General Command of the Police (Faraja), which has been tasked with facilitating this program.

However, there are a few essential details that must be considered for the successful implementation of this initiative. First, the training must be conducted by female instructors, as the dignity and privacy of female applicants must be respected throughout the entire process. This emphasis on female instructors underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a comfortable and respectful environment for women, while also ensuring that the training is of the highest quality.

While the preference is for female instructors, Tafreshi acknowledged that there may be a shortage of qualified female trainers within the country. In such cases, he emphasized that male instructors could be allowed to provide training, but only under specific conditions. These conditions would include ensuring that religious considerations are respected and that the training sessions are conducted under police supervision. This flexibility ensures that women are not disadvantaged by a lack of resources while still maintaining a level of respect for cultural and religious norms.
