Development and Entry into Service
State tests of the Verba system were completed in 2011, confirming its readiness for operational deployment. Following evaluation and refinement, the system formally entered service in 2014. In August of that year, two motorized brigade units of the Eastern Military District, located in Primorsky and Khabarovsk, were among the first to receive the new missile system. Additionally, two separate units of the Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) were equipped with Verba, reflecting the system’s suitability for rapid deployment and airborne operations.
By November 2015, the Western Military District’s motorized brigade in the Leningrad Region had launched more than 50 Verba air defense missile systems during exercises. The system was also integrated into VDV units stationed in Pskov and Tula. This phased introduction demonstrates a deliberate approach to replacing legacy systems while maintaining operational readiness across multiple military districts.
Verba was developed as the successor to the 9K38 Igla shoulder-launched surface-to-air missile system. While Igla remains in service in various forms, Verba incorporates significant upgrades in seeker technology, target discrimination, and integration with automated command networks.
