Embracing Light, Life

Nowruz (meaning “new day”) is an ancient festival that marks the Persian New Year and the arrival of spring. Celebrated for over 3,000 years, it begins at the exact moment of the spring equinox (usually March 20 or 21), symbolizing renewal, rebirth, and the triumph of light over darkness. It is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Families often add mirrors, candles, decorated eggs, and goldfish to enhance the display. The celebrations end with a day outdoors in nature, often involving picnics. People throw their Sabzeh into running water, symbolizing letting go of negativity. It connects people not only to their cultural heritage but also to the natural rhythms of the Earth.
