The Role of Public Space in Political Expression
Public spaces—streets, squares, and embassy surroundings—are central to political life. They provide a (stage) for expression that is visible, immediate, and collective.
In Tehran, such spaces are often used to signal political sentiment not only domestically but also internationally. Demonstrations near embassies carry additional symbolism, as they are directed toward foreign governments and audiences.
The April 2026 gathering used this spatial symbolism effectively. By assembling outside the Iraqi Embassy, participants highlighted cross-border connections while situating their message within a diplomatic context.
