Children grew up knowing their fathers only through stories, medals, and photographs displayed on mantelpieces. Many mothers and fathers never stopped hoping that a missing son might somehow come home.

Entire communities carried the weight of loss. Streets once filled with young men became noticeably quieter. Churches, memorial halls, and village squares gradually filled with names carved into stone—reminders that every victory had come at an immense human cost.
