Police motorcycles are generally different from ordinary civilian motorcycles in the way they are equipped and used. A police motorcycle may be fitted with specialized equipment, additional storage, emergency lighting, communication equipment, protective accessories, or a sidecar. These additions are intended to make the motorcycle useful as a working vehicle rather than simply as a means of personal transportation.
Harley-Davidson produced motorcycles that became associated with American police departments. Large motorcycles were particularly suitable for police duties because they offered a combination of stability, carrying capacity, and road-going performance. Officers could use them for patrol, traffic enforcement, escort duties, and other activities requiring mobility.
The presence of sidecars added another dimension to the motorcycle’s practical function. A sidecar transforms a conventional motorcycle into a three-wheeled vehicle and provides additional space for a passenger or equipment. For police organizations, this could make a motorcycle useful for duties that would otherwise require a larger vehicle.
