The United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine was a proposal by the United Nations, which recommended a partition of Mandatory Palestine at the end of the British Mandate. On 29 November 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted the Plan as Resolution 181(II). The United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine was a proposal developed in the aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust, aimed at resolving the long-standing conflict between Jews and Arabs in the British Mandate of Palestine.
It represented an effort to create independent Arab and Jewish states while addressing the rights and concerns of both communities. After World War I, Britain received the Mandate for Palestine from the League of Nations. Rising tensions between Jewish immigrants (many fleeing persecution in Europe) and the Arab population led to recurring violence. Britain, unable to manage the conflict, referred the issue to the United Nations in 1947.
