Mehrabad International Airport (IATA: THR, ICAO: OIII) is one of the most important airports in Iran, located in District 9 of Tehran, the country’s capital. Since its establishment in 1938, the airport has played a major role in the development of Iranian aviation and transportation. It has served as a center for domestic passenger flights, cargo transportation, and military aviation, becoming an important part of Tehran’s infrastructure. Throughout its history, Mehrabad Airport has experienced significant changes in its architecture, facilities, and operational functions, reflecting the modernization and urban development of Iran.
The airport was constructed in western Tehran and takes its name from Mehrabad-e Jonoubi, meaning South Mehrabad, a village that previously existed in the area. Before the airport was established, the land was associated with prominent Iranian families and had a long history of ownership changes. As Tehran expanded, the area was transformed from a village into an important transportation center.
Mehrabad Airport became increasingly significant as air transportation developed in Iran. Improvements in aviation technology, the growth of passenger demand, and the expansion of commercial activities contributed to its development. Architects, engineers, international companies, and Iranian authorities all played important roles in transforming the airport into a major aviation facility.
