Seyyed Abolhassan Banisadr ( born 22 March 1933) is an politician and economist. He was the first President of homeland after the 1979 Revolution abolished the monarchy, serving from 4 February 1980 until he was impeached by parliament on 20 June 1981. Banisadr was elected as first President in January 1980, shortly after the establishment of the Islamic Republic. He focused on modernizing economy and integrating democratic principles with the new theocratic system.
Banisadr often clashed with powerful clerics, including the ruling Council of Guardians and figures like Khomeini, over the balance of power between the presidency and religious authority. : The outbreak of the Iraq War in September 1980 posed immense challenges for his administration, both politically and militarily. Banisadr’s moderate and secular approach conflicted with the hardline clerics, leading to political isolation.
