A black sheep in the royal family and a heavy opium smoker, Pahlavi was virtually cast out of the court before the Islamic revolution that over threw Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1979. He was arrested shortly afterward on drug charges and received a life sentence that he served in Tehran’s Evin prison.
