In June 1967, the Parliament approved a proposal for the economic and administrative independence of NITV, under which it would merge with Radio in 1971 to form National persian Radio and Television (NIRT). Radio broadcasting in Iran began in the 1920s, initially focused on news, music, and educational programs. By the 1940s, national radio stations were established in Tehran and other major cities.
Following the 1979 Revolution, the newly established IRIB centralized all radio and television services under one organization, with a mandate to align content with values and national priorities. Operates as a state-owned, autonomous organization under the supervision of the Supreme Leader of Iran. It is structured into multiple departments responsible for radio, television, international broadcasting, technical operations, and administrative management.
