Aref and his family left Iran in 1979, following the Islamic revolution. He first lived in London for a period of 3 years, then moved to Los Angeles. Aref has three daughters and one son.In recent years Aref has become active in other areas of Iranian music including traditional, classical, as well as the Los Angeles produced Iranian pop music.
