Dr. Yahya Adl, who was the father of modern surgery and anesthesiology


Adl returned to capital in early 1939. The government had asked a French physician, Dr. Oberlen, to set up the first modern medical school in the country, and Professor Adl had been offered the position of Chair of the Department of Surgery, which he had accepted.2,4 Upon his arrival, he was also named chief of surgery at Avicenna hospital, capital’s most famous hospital and the only modern medical institution that served the poor.
