In 1964 she moved to the United States to Beverly Hills and married the journalist and writer Joe Hyams. In 1970 she posed for Playboy , being photographed by her husband. The marriage, in which Elke Sommer suffered three miscarriages, was dissolved in 1981. In 1993 she married hotelier Wolf Walther, eight years her junior, which marriage also remained childless. Her husband brought two children to the marriage, Sebastian and Caroline.
