In 1991, Kimiaei was nominated for the Golden Bear Award of the Berlin Film Festival for the film Dandan Mar, and he was also awarded the Special Jury Award of the Berlin Film Festival. Also in 2009, he won the best film award at the Fajr Film Festival for the film Crystal Simorgh Crime. In a poll that was conducted to select the best Persian pre-revolutionary movie with the votes of 27 critics and writers, Gozenha was recognized as the best Persian pre-revolutionary movie with 20 votes. In another vote of 55 Iranian movie critics in 2001, Gozhanha was recognized as the best film in the history of Persian cinema with 17 votes, along with Basho and Gharibeh Kooch by Bahram Bayzaei.
