Hussein Khomeini, the eldest grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic

People attacked him and wanted to kill Seyyed Hossein Khomeini, and he, who was armed and had a small weapon, reached for his small weapon. The message is given to the imam that Mr. Seyyed Hossein Khomeini, your grandson, defended Bani Sadr in Mashhad; people attacked him, and he took up arms. What do we do? The Imam told the late Ayatollah Eshraqi to send a message to the officials of the Mashhad Committee that Seyyed Hossein Khomeini be sent under protection to Tehran, and if he touches his weapon, they will shoot him.”

Growing up within the Khomeini household, Hussein was immersed in the religious, intellectual, and revolutionary environment that defined his family. However, as he matured, his experiences and beliefs led him to question many of the principles that became the foundation of the Islamic Republic. Unlike his grandfather, who established Velayat-e Faqih—the principle of guardianship of the Islamic jurist—as the core of  political system, Hussein Khomeini has been openly critical of clerical rule.
