At the age of 17, Zarif ventured to the United States to pursue higher education. He attended the prestigious Drew College Preparatory School in San Francisco before earning his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in International Relations from San Francisco State University. Zarif furthered his studies at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, where he obtained a second Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in International Law and Policy. His doctoral thesis on “Self-Defense in International Law and Policy” showcased his deep understanding of global affairs and legal frameworks.Zarif’s diplomatic career began in 1982 when he was appointed to the Iranian delegation to the United Nations. His proficiency in English and his network of relationships in America played pivotal roles in his early diplomatic endeavors. Notably, Zarif played a significant role in negotiations to secure the release of U.S. hostages held by pro-Iranian gunmen in Lebanon, demonstrating his commitment to diplomacy and dialogue.
