Who is Mostafa Pourmohammadi?


On 24 August 2005, Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi was appointed as the Minister of Interior by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. His appointment was confirmed by the Majlis with 153 votes in favor. During his tenure, he attended a meeting of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10 October 2006, to address the plight of refugees. His term ended in May 2008 in a cabinet reshuffle, allegedly due to informing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about electoral irregularities without Ahmadinejad’s consent.After his dismissal from the Ministry of Interior, Pour-Mohammadi was appointed head of Iran’s general inspectorate office. In this role, he oversaw governmental accountability and anti-corruption efforts.On 4 August 2013, newly elected President Hassan Rouhani nominated Pour-Mohammadi as the Minister of Justice. He was confirmed by the Majlis on 15 August. His tenure was marked by controversies and criticisms from international human rights organizations. On 2 August 2017, it was announced that Pour-Mohammadi would not be part of Rouhani’s second government.
