His election was notable not only because he was the first non-cleric to hold this position since the revolution but also because he received overwhelming support, with 226 out of 259 votes. His tenure as Speaker marked a period of significant legislative activity and reform.Haddad-Adel’s political journey was not without controversy. In the 2000 parliamentary election, he officially ranked as the 33rd candidate of Tehran after recounts by the Council of Guardians. This recount led to the annulment of 700,000 votes and the removal of two prominent candidates from the top 30, highlighting the contentious nature of Iranian electoral politics.
