Ashura: The Tenth of Muharram

Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, holds a special place in Islamic tradition. For Sunni Muslims, this day marks several auspicious events:

  • The parting of the Red Sea by Moses, leading to the salvation of the Israelites from Pharaoh’s tyranny .
  • Noah’s disembarkation from the Ark after the great flood .
  • The forgiveness of Adam by God .
  • The release of Joseph from prison, signifying divine intervention and justice .

Sunni Muslims observe Ashura through acts of piety, including fasting, which is considered a supererogatory act, and other expressions of joy and gratitude. In many Sunni communities, Ashura is marked by festivities, special dishes, and communal gatherings. Some communities even hold carnivals and bonfires to celebrate the day .
