The presence of Kim Jong-un in the flooded areas of North Korea

The Future of North Korea’s Disaster Management

The floods in July 2024 have exposed significant weaknesses in North Korea’s disaster management capabilities. The country’s aging infrastructure, lack of effective early warning systems, and inadequate disaster preparedness measures all contributed to the severity of the damage. If North Korea is to avoid similar disasters in the future, it will need to invest in improving its infrastructure and disaster response capabilities.

However, given the regime’s focus on military spending and the challenges posed by international sanctions, it remains to be seen whether the necessary resources will be allocated to address these issues. In the meantime, the people of North Korea will continue to bear the brunt of the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters.
